How To Use Print Newsletters As A Killer Customer Retention Tool

Although I'm probably better known for the websites I set up for clients as a lead generation tool, there is one very effective offline tool for customer retention which I would suggest that any business use:

A monthly newsletter.

I'm not talking about the trite B.S. that passes for most company newsletters (if they publish anything at all), but rather relevant information and advice that your prospects WANT to tear open and absorb the moment they receive it in the mail.

If your business is in an industry where high transaction values are the norm, publishing a newsletter is especially important (and can lead to very tangible rewards).

3 or 4 pages of content, plus relevant article clippings or exhibits of interest to your customers (i.e. leveraging other people's content) is a simple formula that works.

There is some time and some money involved in producing a monthly newsletter, but this is a venture which can repay you many times over. For example, a print newsletter that I produce netted me a $72,000 contract from a client; now, perhaps I would have gotten this contract sooner or later anyway - but I'd rather have it sooner and I imagine you would as well.

Once you've put together the newsletter, printing postage costs are not very high; a few dollars per issue at most.

Again, depending on your industry, you can even make the whole process cashflow positive by selling subscriptions to non-clients for, say, $37 per month on a good-till-cancelled basis. As long as you can create enough value to make the subscription price pales in comparison, it's a goer. 1,000 subscribers @ $37 per month equals a $444,000 annual revenue stream. Sure, getting 1,000 people to sign up to your newsletter isn't easy - you have to be great at what you do and great at marketing what you do.

If you could get enough subscribers on board to make your newsletter a self-sustaining venture, this would be an accomplishment in itself.

It may be surprising to hear this from a web marketing type like myself, but email often isn't up to the task. Email is fine for keeping in touch with a prospect, but paying clients make a print newsletter economically feasible.

Customers love print media: they can make notes, show them around the office with post-its attached; and of course, they won't lose them in the shuffle of crowded email inboxes. They can always simply toss them out of course, so you'll have to make sure your content is good.

You can test the effectiveness of a print newsletter for your business by determining on a particular number of issues you're willing to commit to (maybe 6). If it doesn't pan out, no harm has really been done; plus you'll have some great autoresponder material already written for future use.

If you don't have the time to co-ordinate this, speak to a copywriting or marketing agency who can handle the whole strategy for you. (I'm even considering offering this as a packaged service to clients, but I'm not actively marketing this at the moment).

Today, many of the linkages between customer and supplier are weak. But so too are linkages in most company's internal supply chain.
